Decoupage: Wallpapered Furniture feature

My interest on this subject was sparked by a random piece of furniture that has been occupying my bedroom at my parents' house. It's sort of aTV-Stand Shelf made of wood and seen far better years. It's certainly no valuable antique, though I believe it's been around since the 80s/90s. It used to serve as my own TV-stand until my parents upgraded the living room tv and I inherited the old one. Being the cheap pack-rat college student that I am, I still keep it in my room to hold random objects and intend on using it to help furnish my next apartment (my current one came pre-furnished with generic items).

Of course, I intend to give it an update. I'll have tosee my future place before I can determine what color to paint it...but I thought about maybe just painting the black, white, or some funky color. It was after I thought about maybe painting some designs on it that I thought about just using wallpaper to cover the grooves (for lack of appropriate terminology) on each side to give it a punch of uniqueness and flair.

Naturally, I consulted my friend google and discovered that that type of craft is commonly known as decoupage (from the french verb decouper to cut). It certainly is a way of giving life to a dull piece of furniture...and people take it a lot further than I had imagined.

HGTV.com had some interesting examples of spiced-up decoupage furniture on their site, like this coffee table. It's not exactly wallpaper, but you can get the idea.

I cannot possibly mention wallpapered furniture without paying tribute to Bryonie Porter, who is responsible for the beauuuutiful pieces below...

Just an interesting factoid about this dresser...the blackbird wallpaper by Osborne & Little featured on this piece is the same wallpaper used on the walls of the dressing room at the Urban Outfitters I frequent in Jacksonville :)

Now, I'm no Bryonie Porter and I'm not sure if I have the ability or patience to create pieces as extravagent as those...but it's definitely possible to make some beautiful looking things yourself.

I happened across another piece of decoupage on Design*Sponge that is my absolute favorite...

This piece was posted as a part of a before/after project by one of their readers, Misty. I love it because it's beautiful, sophisticated, fun, and something that can be done by fellow DIY-ers :)

Well, that's all I've got for now. Take a look around the internet for more examples the use fabrics and other varied materials. Decoupage is one of many methods of bringing that old piece of furniture back from the dead and one that I may attempt in the future.

establishing the norms.
Looks as though it's been about a year since I jotted anything down in here. It actually feels a bit longer than that, to be honest. So, forgive me but this entry might be more personal than I had intended for the sake of catching things up to speed.

I'm still not sure what this blog is about yet.
Let's just talk about relevant things.

Sophomore year has come and gone. My major has currently been changed into a mouth-full. Hello, I am double-major in Communications with a concentration in Advertising and Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design & Digital Media ...and a minor in Photography.

Keeping my options open. Not being a full major in photography, however, is somewhat devastating. My rationale is that one doesn't need to MAJOR in photography in order to do it and cheaper workshops are always out there for learning new things. Meanwhile, Communications w/ Advertising is practical and Graphic Design is a mix of it all. Although, I'm honestly scared shitless of the competition. Still, my stomach churns a bit every time I hear someone say they're a Photographer for a living. It's probably the only fully thought-out dream I've ever had--but hey, it's still an option.

Okay, so why is this relevant? Hold on. I'm getting to it, so just bare with me a little longer.

So, the extra major obviously means more school time. Looks like I'll have to do 1 extra semester + an extra summer--but I figure that's not bad considering I'm getting 2 degrees and a minor. This, however, puts kind of a damper on internships and the study abroad I mentioned previously. I probably won't be talking about study abroad again. Internships though--probably yes.

Alright so...the point. I initially said that this blog will be a web of inspiration and that's what it's going to do. I'm not sure how it's going to work yet, but I figure I'll talk about all things visual. So, expect lots of DESIGN and VISUALS. We're talking interior design, fashion, graphic design, decorations, photography, film, and other things that make me a happy camper. Occasionally I'll chime in how the degrees are going, but it'll be relevant.

More kind-of relevant mumbojumbo. I've become increasingly more domesticated over the past year. From watching too much TLC to moving into my first apartment to watching too much HDTV and being obsessed with Interior Design. I say this because you can expect it in future entries.

That's all, folks!

seeking it out
so, I've been planning this little entry for about a bajillion months now and i'm finally getting around to it.

they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I figure a crap-ton of pictures should say pretty much everything I wanted to. perhaps even better.

so, have at it.

(and let's just hope sometime in the future that the facebook links don't die, seeing as that's what i'll be hosting these off :P)

(not in order, mind you).
*several of these were stolen from various facebooks.

that's just about everything in a nutshell. now add in several concerts that I didn't post pictures of being I've recently become wary of copyright stuff.
so expect my concert pics in the next post, watermarked and all.
