Decoupage: Wallpapered Furniture feature

My interest on this subject was sparked by a random piece of furniture that has been occupying my bedroom at my parents' house. It's sort of aTV-Stand Shelf made of wood and seen far better years. It's certainly no valuable antique, though I believe it's been around since the 80s/90s. It used to serve as my own TV-stand until my parents upgraded the living room tv and I inherited the old one. Being the cheap pack-rat college student that I am, I still keep it in my room to hold random objects and intend on using it to help furnish my next apartment (my current one came pre-furnished with generic items).

Of course, I intend to give it an update. I'll have tosee my future place before I can determine what color to paint it...but I thought about maybe just painting the black, white, or some funky color. It was after I thought about maybe painting some designs on it that I thought about just using wallpaper to cover the grooves (for lack of appropriate terminology) on each side to give it a punch of uniqueness and flair.

Naturally, I consulted my friend google and discovered that that type of craft is commonly known as decoupage (from the french verb decouper to cut). It certainly is a way of giving life to a dull piece of furniture...and people take it a lot further than I had imagined.

HGTV.com had some interesting examples of spiced-up decoupage furniture on their site, like this coffee table. It's not exactly wallpaper, but you can get the idea.

I cannot possibly mention wallpapered furniture without paying tribute to Bryonie Porter, who is responsible for the beauuuutiful pieces below...

Just an interesting factoid about this dresser...the blackbird wallpaper by Osborne & Little featured on this piece is the same wallpaper used on the walls of the dressing room at the Urban Outfitters I frequent in Jacksonville :)

Now, I'm no Bryonie Porter and I'm not sure if I have the ability or patience to create pieces as extravagent as those...but it's definitely possible to make some beautiful looking things yourself.

I happened across another piece of decoupage on Design*Sponge that is my absolute favorite...

This piece was posted as a part of a before/after project by one of their readers, Misty. I love it because it's beautiful, sophisticated, fun, and something that can be done by fellow DIY-ers :)

Well, that's all I've got for now. Take a look around the internet for more examples the use fabrics and other varied materials. Decoupage is one of many methods of bringing that old piece of furniture back from the dead and one that I may attempt in the future.
